Environmental Charities - An Introduction

When coverage and interest in an issue rises, so too do the organisations related to it, and the environment is no exception; there are a number of charities worldwide who all deal in problems relating to the environment.

Indeed, there are now so many that its hard to chart them. But, for ease of access, here is an introduction to the U.K’s major players.

Greenpeace:

Perhaps the most famous organisation for environmental campaigns, Greenpeace was founded in 1971, with a trigger campaign for stopping the U.S from testing nuclear devices. From there it turned to wider environmental issues.

In the 21st Century, its aim is an ambitious one:

“Our goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity.”

It is an independent organisation, and accepts no support from governments. It has five main campaign areas:

“1) Preventing climate change by ending our addiction to polluting fuels and promoting clean, renewable and efficient energy.

2) The protection of oceans and ancient forests.

3) The elimination of toxic chemicals.

4) Against the release of genetically modified organisms into nature.

5) For nuclear disarmament and an end to nuclear contamination.”

Friend’s of the Earth:

Another organisation established in 1971, and based in the U.K. They run campaigns on biodiversity, climate change, fair trade, green transport, and waste, amongst others. This, from their website:

“Friends of the Earth is:

1) UK ’s most influential environmental campaigning organisation.

2) Most extensive environmental network in the world, with almost 1 million supporters across five continents and more than 70 national organisations worldwide.

3) Unique network of campaigning local groups, working in over 200 communities throughout England , Wales and Northern Ireland.

4) Dependent on individuals for over 90 per cent of its income.”

Trees for Cities:

Working in urban areas for the promotion of the environment, ‘Trees for Cities’ is currently running extensive projects in London, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Brighton.

“Trees for Cities started life in 1993 as Trees for London when a group of young Londoners recognised the need for more trees in the capital… Trees for London was established with the following mission: “to advance the education of the public in the appreciation of trees and their amenity value, and in furtherance of this the planting and protection of trees everywhere, and in particular inner city areas”. Initially money was raised through fundraising club nights as young Londoners danced through the night to raise funds for tree planting.

In 2003, on our tenth anniversary, we changed our name to Trees for Cities, largely in response to requests for support and advice from cities around the world. In addition to tree planting, the charity is now involved in a wide range of activities that include educational work with schools and community groups, vocational training in arboriculture, horticulture and woodland management, re-landscaping the public realm, campaigning, and yes, we’re still partying!”

Here, then, are three of the U.K’s biggest environmental charities. There are a host of others, working locally and nationally, and internationally.

Chris Woolfrey is the Environmental Charities expert at EcoSwitch The environmental social network.

How to Heal from a Painful Divorce

You probably thought your thought your life and your marriage were going along quite well. Yes, there were challenges and difficulties, but you really believed the good outweighed the bad. Through the ups and downs you hung in, hoping in time that your partner would see the light and decide to treat you with love and respect. You hoped in time that you would be able to live the dreams that you held precious in your heart of hearts.

Then came the ugly word DIVORCE. You were shocked! You cried. You pleaded. You begged for another chance, but the answer was still NO. Divorce papers were served. You were left picking up the pieces of a life you thought you shared.

So, now it’s time to go forward. You read magazine articles, you gather books, you talk to your family and friends, you find a therapist, you join a support group and you buy new clothes. Through it all you may feel empty and alone, sometimes worthless, sometimes angry, sometimes scared of the future.

You find yourself wondering, “What does it take to really heal?” As a psychotherapist, I deal with people every day who are going through emotional pain like yours. I’m writing these healing steps for you, because I want you to know that the choices you make in this healing process will literally determine the quality of your future life.

1. Give yourself permission to grieve. Going through divorce is like grieving the death of your relationship, your dreams and your future together. Let yourself really feel the emotional pain and move through it naturally by journaling about your feelings and crying the tears that need to be cried.

2. Hold on to your intention to heal, forgive, and move forward. Divorce can be very painful for a time, but having the intention to forgive and move forward helps you to learn what you need to learn and start over in a new way, instead of being angry and bitter for the rest of your life! Remember that your divorce could be the best thing that ever happened to you if you choose to use it as an opportunity for emotional healing and personal growth.

3. Create a healthy support system of true friends who support your personal growth through this experience. Who you choose as friends at this time could easily make the difference between staying stuck in the anger and pain for the rest of your life or moving forward to create a whole new life for yourself! If you want a positive future, choose friends who help you grow!

6 Powerful Practices for Coping with Information Overload

Today’s high-tech world is deluged with more information than ever imaginable. In spite of all the promises of the paperless office, statistics show that exactly the opposite is happening. It is projected that by 2005 there will be 50% more paper than there was in 1995! Those who have tried the paperless solution find it has its own challenges. How many lunches have you missed because you were searching through files - never finding what you needed?

Asking four basic questions will help you make decisions about how to manage the information in your office - whether it’s for paper or electronic files.

1. What information do you really need to keep?

2. In what form do you need to keep it?

3. For how long? 4. How can you find it when we need it? (That’s the really big one!)

To improve your chances of retrieving information, consider these six possibilities:

1. Create a File Index (a roadmap for available information!) for your company. One of most valuable lessons I learned from my father was “Half of any job is having the right tool.” The network version of The Paper Tiger software (www.thepapertiger.com) allows colleagues to share information in a way never before possible and to avoid wasting time recreating information that already exists because no one knew it existed. While many people are looking at scanning as a way of coping with information overload, make sure that you are really solving a problem, and not just creating another. Using a computer software program can make handling paper so easy that the investment of time and equipment to go “paperless” may not be necessary, or when you do convert to electronic storage you will avoid just creating a faster mess!

2. Develop Retention Guidelines. Clutter is Postponed Decisions®. Paper will continue to pile up because someone needs to make a decision about retention. Clients often ask me how long they should keep documents. Determine the answer by looking at your own past experience. Often, that means asking the people with whom you work who really use the papers! If you’re not sure, consult the guidelines in Kiplinger’s Taming the Paper Tiger at Work. That’s one of the major reasons I wrote the book! (If you need retention information for files at home, consult Kiplinger’s Taming the Paper Tiger at Home.)

3. Hold a File Clean-Out Day. Make the day fun! Wear comfortable clothes, order in lunch, and give prizes - such as the “Most Progress” or “The Funniest Discovery”. Provide staff with storage boxes for files that can be kept in less accessible spaces. Create a “white elephant room” for employees to put items they aren’t using, but other people might want. Consider hiring an organizing consultant (www.4ptacs.com) to give a short presentation on The Art of Wastebasketry® at the beginning of the day and to facilitate the process during the day. (See Tip #5.)

4. Use, and train others around you, to automatically use The FAT System. There are only three decisions you can make about any piece of paper: File, Act, or Toss. Make decisions on paper as it comes in. Put papers that require action into “Action Files.” Papers you may never need, but are afraid to throw away go into Reference Files. As Reference Files become old, they become Archive Files, or can be tossed.

5. Continually practice “The Art of Wastebasketry®. Research shows that 80% of what we keep, we never use. Don’t make today’s mail turn into tomorrow’s pile! Ask yourself: 1. Does this require action? 2. Can I identify a specific use? 3. Is it difficult to get again? 4. Is it recent enough to be useful? 5. Are there legal considerations?

If the answer to all these questions is “No,” ask one final question: “What is the worst possible thing that would happen if I didn’t have this piece of paper?” If you can live with your answer, toss - or recycle it! Since security if a big issue today, I’ve discovered that a shredder is one of the best tools to encourage people to throw things!

6. Take Advantage of Report Features of The Paper Tiger If you’re afraid to toss something, don’t worry about it - just keep it! Your File Index will help you find it in case you do need it, or help you clean it out when your files get full. Recently, my assistant informed me there was no more space for new projects. Instead of just adding more file cabinets, I took the File Clean-Out Report automatically created by The Paper Tiger software on my next trip, and made notes on what could be cleaned, tossed, or archived. When I returned to my office, I gave the report to a high school student, working in our office for the summer. She did the cleaning out and transferring of files for us!

Your office is a reflection of you and your organization. An organized, uncluttered workspace will make you more productive and less stressed. You can stop losing time searching for files. In fact, you may even find time for lunch!

Rock a Bye Baby - Caring For Your Boat!

The boat is now out of the water.

We took it out on Saturday and it has been put to bed for the winter, secure in its cradle, swaddled tight with tarpaulin.

The Sailing Fanatic is quietly happy. He watched over the whole process and is already planning the peaceful, solitary hours he will have to spend scrubbing, scraping and generally fixing the boat.

I too am happy - safe in the knowledge that I won’t have to go for a sail for at least the next five months!

For there has scarcely been a week since we bought Sea-Dreamer that we haven’t been over to look at, bail out, or go for a jaunt in the boat. This whole ‘having a boat’ thing has taken over our lives much more than I had anticipated.

In fact, taking on Sea-Dreamer has been a bit of an eye-opener in all sorts of ways. Old, familiar issues have received a new and sometimes acrimonious airing. Take the question of time, for example:

‘What! That’s the third weekend in a row you’ll be off sailing! When are you going to find time to… [fill in the blank]?’

Or money:

‘How much? You’ve already spent a fortune on that boat!’

‘Darling, I know that the Macho-Mucho-Strongo-Shackle costs six times as much as all the others, but do you really want to compromise on safety?’

Father/Child relationships:

‘It’s not fair! I don’t want to go sailing again! It’s boring!’

‘Well, we’re going - and that’s final!’

Husband/Wife relationships:

‘It’s not fair! I don’t want to go sailing again! It’s boring!’

‘Oh, pleeeeeaaaasssseeee!’

Or even co-owner/co-owner relationships:

‘So, when do you want to use the boat?’

‘I don’t mind - when do you want to use the boat?’

‘I don’t mind - when do you want to use the boat?’

All in all, I have decided that buying a boat for the first time has a surprising impact on relationships - similar to major life-changing events such as having a baby. Chief among them being the fact that you really haven’t a clue what it will be like until you get one!

Like a first baby, a first boat brings an entirely new focus to your life - one that may be a bit of shock to the less involved members of the family. It eats money, devours time and absorbs attention.

I console myself with one thought, however. Like a baby, a boat requires careful attention to its nether regions - but this time the person struggling out of bed to tackle a particularly dirty bottom will not be me!

Management of Multi Billion Dollar Foundations

If you think managing a multi-billion dollar multi-national conglomerate is tough well then imagine trying to give away money in a multi-billion dollar foundation? That will indeed be tough, but there are two men with quite a bit of management experience between them who are going to give it a shot.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet have united in a common cause to help humanity to the tune of 60 Billion Dollars. That is right the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has added a trustee; Warren Buffet. Now their foundation has 60 Billion to spend on worthy causes to help the whole of humanity.

Giving away money is difficult and some say the most difficult thing in the world. Giving away money efficiently is very hard. But imagine what they can do together, these three great human beings. Imagine what will be done for Education and what about TB, AIDS and Malaria? These folks are really going to do it, imagine what a great gift this is for the world and it is really happening too. This is really and they are really doing it.

Maybe there is hope for humanity after all? But as they said it will not be easy to do, managing 60 Billion Dollars and giving it away without waste and efficiently as possible is one of the toughest things in the World to do. But if anyone can it will be Melinda, Bill and Warren who can get it done. Kudos to you all and thank you on behalf of the World. Consider this in 2006.

Create A Goal To Help You To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

This article describes how creating a goal or target can help you to succeed in life. I myself want to be successful in life and have read many books on the subject. One lesson and something all the successful people I have read about seem to do, is that they are always setting themselves goals for the future. Setting targets has among other things helped me to quit smoking cigarettes. I hope you enjoy reading my article.

One example I clearly remember from one such book, described a survey that had been carried out for schoolchildren who were in their final year of high school. One hundred people took part in the survey and they were asked to answer a number of questions. The main question the people who commissioned the survey were interested in was about where the children wanted to be in five years time and what they wanted to be doing, for example in their business life.

Not all children of this age are that mature and in the end there were only five answers which were taken as being a true goal for the future. Five years later these one hundred people were contacted again and were asked to fill in yet another survey. The results were quite staggering as the five children who had set a goal for the future had a higher combined net worth than the other ninety five added together. Money of course is not everything in life, however for me this showed, that is if you believe everything that you read, that you are more likely to be a success in life if you set yourself a goal.

I then looked at the aspects of my life with which I was not happy with. At that age, I smoked around fifteen cigarettes a day. This was something I quite enjoyed but which I knew was not healthy for me and something which also cost me a lot of money.

I set myself small targets, I would firstly reduce my intake to only ten a day and after two weeks reduce it down to five. I would then try to totally stop smoking after around a month.

This sounded so simple, however proved to be quite difficult. I was determined to stick to my goals and kept thinking of all of the benefits of quitting smoking. I am happy to say I was successful in my quest to stop smoking, even though it did take rather longer than one month.

I have since followed the same pattern in other areas of my life, to help me to lose weight for example. This attitude has helped me to no end and I will continue to set myself more goals in the future.

There is a Hidden ‘Successful Formula’ in Everything

Although many say that things change on the net, still what worked before keeps working. You can advertise with start pages or banner exchanges. They are both good tools. They can be the ‘Greatest Advertising Technique” to you, although some say that they are outdated.

Many do not believe that banner exchanges still work. Some still use them successfully. You
need the right formula to make them work.

Let me give you an example: If you have a PC and you do not know how to use it, you need to learn how. You go and learn the tactics and you will successfully switch on the PC.

This means that you need to know how to use the advertising techniques. You have to see
what works best for you? Which do you prefer? Start pages or safe lists. It’s better to use the
tool you prefer. This will make it more fun and you are likely to use it better.

There is a proven formula to market with safe lists. However 99% do not use it… Yet it has worked for those who use it. You need to know that there are millions of people using safe lists. Do you know that millions mean more than something?

If you follow a proven, easy-to-follow tactic you will succeed with safe list. Using less effort and getting better results. You can be successful in everything, but you must know the right formula. You will realize that the right formula is also the easiest and fastest…

Try analyzing a program you use. You will find that there is something better you can do. There is a great formula you are not using.

Many people use start pages, yet 50% doesn’t know that there exists a simple formula. You
need to use ’splash, eye capturing pages’ and not sales pages in start pages. It is very
common to see sales pages in start pages, which means that the owner did not figure out that
there is a better formula to market with start pages.

Try figuring out what formulas you can use to make your advertising techniques successfully work.
