Backpacking in New Zealand - How to Get Amongst the Locals & Experience Things Off The Tourist Trail

A great way for backpackers to get a taste of the real New Zealand is to seek out local events and festivals in smaller towns and communities. Take your time to chill out in one place for a while and you will be surprised how much more you can deepen your experience by getting amongst the local scene.

One festival not to be missed is the legendary Wild Foods festival held annually in a small town on the West Coast of the South Island called Hokitika.

Due to the isolated location of the West Coast the ‘Coasters’ have always done things their own way, paying little attention to how the rest of the world lives. The festival is a prime example of this, as it show cases the rather random delicacies of the coast and the local characters that live there. You name it, it’s on offer and both locals and tourists come from afar to challenge themselves to eat the huge selection of wild foods.

Some of the more memorable dishes at this years festival included Mountain Oysters (goat testicles); huhu grubs that were very much alive; eel spine, marinated duck tongue; semen sauce; cow tit; seagull turd; rotten fish eyes and possum pie. MMMMMM Yuk! Funnily enough there was such a high demand for the live huhu grubs that they sold out. The atmosphere is awesome as everywhere you look people are egging their friends on encouraging them to try the most vulgar of the vulgar wild foods on offer.

A few of the more tame - or should we say edible foods - included “Bambi” burgers, white bait fritters, homemade fudge, pickled punga (native fern), mussels and wild pork.

Let’s not forget that there is also plenty of booze and live music (hillbilly style) at the festival for those who like a drink or three and a bit of a boogie. The locally brewed Monteiths Ale was flowing from mid day along with a selection of New Zealand wines.

Hokitika has a population of about 6,000 and with more than 10,000 people attending the Wild Foods Festival accommodation options get rather interesting. So where does everyone sleep? The local fire brigade set up a couple of large camp sites right by the beach which over flows with tents and campervans. The setting is to die for… right at your doorstep is a rugged west coast beach dotted with bonfires as far as one can see which makes for the perfect place to chill out on return from the Hillbilly dance.

On waking early to enjoy watching the sun rise take a stroll and you will discover that the less organised have set up home on the railway track, footpath, under the town clock or in some less fortunate cases in amongst the abundance of porta-loos…

There are many fantastic festivals in New Zealand, so be sure to enquire about what is on and where during your backpacking through our beautiful country, Aotearoa - the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Learning the Value of an e-Business Website

Starting a business is a huge, but rewarding, task to
undertake. An internet-based business is no exception and
the same dedication and hard work is required to make it
take off and be successful. You will soon learn the
immense value of a e-business website. Think of this tool
as a virtual storefront. Instead of a physical store you
can stock your goods or tout your services, you will
utilize this website in a similar fashion. Just as you
would maintain a store and ensure it is appropriately
decorated for your particular business. You would not
expect your customers and clients to shop in a store with
cluttered shelves, dusty counters, and dirty floors. For
that same reason, you should not expect your customers to
shop in a virtual space that is littered with text or links
that do not work.

In order to make money doing internet business deals,
you should run your virtual business like anyone doing
business in the traditional brick and mortar sense. Even
though you work out of the comfort of your own home, treat
your e-business with the utmost professional attitude.
When you begin your internet-based business, carefully
consider your website. Think of the World Wide Web as a
huge marketplace and your business needs something to make
it stand apart from the rest. Developing an e-commerce
website that has the necessary pizzazz and draws the
attention of your intended audience will benefit your
business. It may be necessary to hire an outside agency
to develop your website to its fullest potential.

Many individuals find it difficult to promote a
professional business over the vast expanse of
cyberspace. For that reason, your e-business website is a
critical tool in showing your customers and clients exactly
what you offer. In this age of advanced technology, more
and more people are turning to the internet for their
e-commerce needs. Additionally, many thrifty shoppers
are constantly seeking the best deals and values for
their money. Depending on your goods or services, you may
be able to appeal to a wide variety of individuals. A
professionally designed and immaculate website is a
perfect opportunity to put your best foot forward.
Instead using your personality and people skills to meet
and impress potential clients, your website will have to
do the talking for you. A well-developed website free of
non-working links, error messages, and images that will
not pull up will promote a professional business that
takes its job seriously. Additionally, you need to make
sure your website is properly updated on regular basis.
Continuing to update your website ensures the information
is not outdated and your customers or clients receive the
most recent information possible. This is especially true
if your information should change. You would not dream of
passing out business cards with outdated information, so
you should not maintain a website with old information.
If you are unsure of the specifics of how to update your
website or do not have the time to do so, there are a
great deal of web companies in existence that will take
care of this task for you.

In the end, your business website is well worth the time
and money you have invested in it. Essentially serving
as the face of your e-business, your website should
portray the main goals and objectives of your business.
In addition to detailing your products or services, your
website should represent your overall business. Enabling
potential clients or customers to understand a bit about
your business will allow them to feel more at ease, making
them more likely to purchase you wares.

Everything I Need to Know About SuccessI Learned Through Networking

Copyright 2006 Red Ladder, Inc.

As a Consultant, I attend a lot of networking events, industry association programs, and one-on-one meetings for breakfast, coffee or other food-related events. Whenever I network or attend events, I always tell people that it was worth my time and money if I gained just one creative idea or contact from the experience. This past month I really put that concept to the test by attending numerous networking meetings, including one tele-networking event!

Here are a few nuggets that I picked up as I networked my way through the past month.

1. Be Bold! The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis recently featured motivational speaker Ann Ulrich, who said, “We create our own possibilities for success by boldly creating opportunity from possibility.” According to Ann, combine possibility with perseverance and professionalism and you have your own personalized recipe for success. How do you create your own possibilities? By being bold of course.

2. Think Big. Sandra Wakefield, an advocate of Brilliant Living (her TV program bears that name), is also an advocate of brilliant networking. She recently brought together a group of like-minded women with the intent of connecting them with an organization that could help make their business goals and personal dreams come true. Not only did she inspire these women to think big she inspired them to think about how taking their businesses to the million dollar (or more!) level. Now that’s thinking big.

3. Tell Your Stories. Tom Bengtson, owner, publisher and editor of Northwestern Financial Review, has been in the industry long enough to know what connects a writer to the reader or a speaker to the audience: personal stories. He encouraged me to share my own personal stories in my writing and my speaking engagements. According to Tom, “We learn something about the person who shares their stories, and there is value in that. But the real reason to share your stories is to learn something about yourself.” The message? Sometimes the best lessons in life we teach ourselves.

4. Develop a “kitchen cabinet.” Erin Dady works closely with aspiring women political candidates. A panelist at the recent Joint Dinner of Women’s Professional Associations, Erin shared some advice that highlighted the importance of having a trusted group of advisors on your team that she called, “your kitchen cabinet.” These were the trusted men and women that you surround yourself with around your kitchen table. This powerful network is a key success factor when running for office. It can also be the key to success if you are climbing the corporate ladder (think mentors) or a growing a successful small business (think advisory board). Net, net, regardless of what you call them, no woman should be without the equivalent of a powerful “kitchen cabinet.”

5. Filter Advice. Judge Susan Burke, recent panelist at the Joint Dinner of Women’s Professional Associations, spoke about her recent experience in running for public office. In the early stages, every person she encountered (including her boss, husband and parents) gave her a list of reasons why she shouldn’t run for office. That being the case, what finally compelled her to run for office? “I learned to beware advice from people who have a vested interest in the outcome,” stated Judge Burke. The lesson? Seek advice but ultimately you need to make the final decision.

This past month I was lucky enough to obtain the five great nuggets I shared with you above. To recap: don’t be afraid to be bold, think big, or tell your stories. But during the process, remember to surround yourself with trusted advisors but be sure to filter any advice you receive. Not bad for a month’s worth of networking. Don’t you agree?

Google Wallet Vs. Ebay’s Paypal

A new online payment processor is in the works to compete against Ebay’s Paypal system. Tentatively called Google Wallet, the new system is being developed by the Mountain View, CA, search engine giant and is expected to have an official launch date by early 2006. Choice is good and soon consumers may have a viable alternative to quirky Paypal.

Rumors of the new payment processing system from Google surfaced online in June 2005. Speculation has been rampant as to when or even if the new system would be released, but now it appears that a beta version of the program will soon be made available.

Google Wallet, if successful, may become a great alternative to eBay’s Paypal system. In October 2004, the entire Paypal system collapsed for five days, although Paypal insisted that they were only “intermittent issues” that “would soon be addressed.” This outage coupled with what many have long considered to be terrible customer service issues, e.g., unauthorized charge backs to members’ accounts, onerous fees, and “customer-no-service”, has made Google’s timing especially sweet.

Related to Google Wallet, is a recent rumor that Google may take direct aim at the likes of eBay and Craig’s List and start an online auction/classified listing site.

All of this is good news for you, the consumer, as competition heats up in the payment processor wars. Stay tuned…these are exciting times in which we live!

At the Carwash; The Customer really is always Right

You have no doubt heard the saying that the customer is always right. When you are a customer you happy with this position, when you are the owner of a small business, sometimes you see this is like opening Pandora’s box. But for the sake of argument, let me add a caveat to that saying: “The customer is always right, even when they’re wrong and you know it.” After 27 years in the car wash and cleaning industry, I have heard it all. Here are some ways carwashes can mitigate upset customers.

Handling Complaints

When you handle a complaint, you need to treat the customer as though they are in the right for expressing their opinion, and since you are taking their money, they have every right to complain. You can handle these complaints by simply listening to what it is they have to say and offering suggestions as to how the problem can be fixed. Often fixing the problem might be very easy. Drips from a door jam or a streaked window is easily handled, and we’ve already suggested solutions and ideas to help that customer return with their business.

If you don’t think you can fix the problem (for whatever reason), you can have them call the owner and let them handle any situation, and help mediate or settle any problem that might have occurred. This will not change their attitude towards the manager or employee, every business man knows you cannot please everyone. Some customers just like to complain and a little empathy goes a long way.

Removing A Customer

If a customer continually complains, and you’ve given them free car washes, discounts, and just about everything within your power, the next step is to give them a business card or referral to the most expensive car wash or detail shop in the area and say “I’m sorry, we’re just unable to please you.” Let them learn for themselves just how valuable and affordable your service is to them. They may be sorry for complaining and come back, but in the meantime you’ll have removed them from your database and saved yourself weeks of problems. As well as eliminated an irate and irrational customer from tainting your image in front of your more decent clientele.

Bad Checks

Occasionally, maybe once a week, someone will write you a bad check. Usually it’s under thirty dollars, and they’ll really be embarrassed. The best thing, of course, is not to confront the customer in front of others. Never say to someone “You wrote me a bad check” in front of their co-workers or even people they do not know. This will embarrass your customer.

Simply mail the bad check back to the person who wrote it and request to be paid in cash the next time you see them. If it’s a customer you’ve never seen before and think you never will again, mail it back to them and ask them to write another check ‘now that your funds may be more sufficient.’ We’ve found this to be the easiest way to handle a touchy situation. They’ll usually feel bad and mail you the money back. If they don’t, don’t worry about it, just write it off and go on with being the best car wash company in the world. If a person seems to write bad checks consistently you should, of course, politely suggest to that person that business should be done on a cash-only basis.

Remember the customer is always right and they need to know that you know that, so show empathy and understanding and make them feel that you respect them and want their business at your carwash. Think about it.
