Digging into spam and filtering services

If you talk to anyone who uses email, spam is something that is frequently on there mind. How often is it that you open your inbox checking for an email from your mom, and you end up with emails with subjective titles involving animals, and foreign objects.

There are ways to fight back against Spam, and one of the most popular is through the use of a spam filtering service. There is all different types of spam, and surprisingly not all of them involve email. Most spamming involves the advertising or otherwise promotion of a product, however this is not true in some cases.

Most common types of spamming include: Email spam, Link spam and search engine spam.

Email Spam is the simple act of sending out massive amounts of ‘junk email’ to anyone and everyone, in order to promote a product. Often times spamming has been exploited by more ‘undergorund’ industries such as the adult industry, but it would be unfair to say that other industries haven’t used it as well.

Link Spam is a form of spamming or spamdexing that recently became publicized most often when targeting the increasingly popular weblogs. Weblogs is one of the biggest problems, however link spam also affects guestbooks, and online discussion boards. The purpose behind spamming these various places, is to display hyperlinks to a various page or product, which helps both with user exposure and search engine popularity.

Search engine spam is usually closely related with the above “link spam”, as it is the process of creating countless numbers of pages, that populate search engines. Often times these pages will be full of garbage text and have no real value on there own. When a user visits them, they will either be re-directed to a completely different page, often times on another domain, or show prominent advertising.

Everyone can take their part in removing spam. The easiest way for a general user to not encourage spam, is not to use it. Spammers only spam, because it must be effective, otherwise they would find something better to do with their time. It is also recommended to get various levels of personal spam protection, which is often times included with anti-virus software. 3rd party solutions such as Hotmail, have very good spam detection, however often times spam will leak in, and in that case you can help hotmail out by notifying them of the occurence, so that they can better help protect you next time.

Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the article, this caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks.

Not People Friendly

I have been told that I have the knack of speaking to one person and make it seem like I am speaking to hundreds of people. In other words, person to person communication is not my strong suit. I would love to make the money that some of the sales people have the potential to make but I lack in the people friendly skills. I would love to find the best home based businesses that gives the opportunity to someone like me that may not have the people skills but definitely has the drive to work hard in any career opportunity offered me.

There must be something to the best home based businesses idea because I find that a lot of websites are offering up their information for free. They obviously can not offer up this information for free if they were not making something for signing up in the first place. So in turn, there must be some way to make a lot of money off the internet with practically no up front investment to be made. I am anxious to keep researching and see what I can come up with and how much I can make without ever having to front any of my money.

Podcasting — Let the Experiments Begin

As you know podcasting is simply an audio file that is placed on a website. If it is combined with an RSS file — people can subscribe to your feed, and listen to your words of wisdom at their leisure. This is a good thing, it is getting your words –your voice — your identity to the masses.

Podcasting — Getting Started

Publishing your podcast is simple as well — look to Blogger, TypePad, and then use Feedburner to convert your podcast into a feed.

Simple Way to Make A Podcast

The simpliest way to get setup and to start experimenting with your own podcasting– is to simply get a microphone and of course, free software from Audacity.

Okay, as we all know, not many are comfortable with hearing their own voice — but hey, it’s your voice — and the voice allows your listeners to know that, yes, I am a real human, and not a machine.

Once done, you will need to upload your podcast onto your server. The only limitations I see would be how much, or little space, you have on your server– as well as the bandwidth usage.

Submitting your Podcast to Feeds

To get your podcast out to the masses, you will need to hit the directories that cater to podcasting. Well, one of the quickest way to get this done, is through Feedburner. Just check the “Podcasting button” and you will be directed to a page with all the information you need. In fact, they have a site called “PingShot” that will automatically notify the directories and web-based aggregators when you publish new content — I mention this one, because it is free. No sense, paying for something if you are in the experimental mode, right? But . . .

There is still a learning curve here, and you will need to take a little time to devour some of the info on the different sites to get the information you want, as well as, how to use it. But it looks like podcasting is now the in thing. Will it last? I think it may. But it looks like the next, new and great thing coming to the Internet is the Video Casts. The only thing I see that may keep some from partaking in this media is the bandwidth and storage. But we will see.

How to Record an Interview for Your Podcast When the Person Is In a Different Location

One of the problems many podcast producers fall into is how to record a podcast when your co-host or interview subject lives in another state or province.

Since having that person fly or drive to your location is silly, there are many cost-effective ways to record individuals for your podcast and still get a broadcast quality sound.

Since I’m the only host for my podcast called Cubicle Divas, when I need to record an interview to include in my podcast, I use a service called Audio Acrobat. For a small monthly fee, I call the person I need to interivew, and then call the Audio Acrobat number using my three-way calling feature on my phone.

If you’re looking for a no-fee option, Jason Van Orden has a solution for the more frugally-minded podcaster. Van Orden co-hosts a podcast called Internet Business Mastery with another person in another state. He has a simple strategy for recording both of their voices at the same time that doesn’t cost a dime.

“We call each other on Skype or Google Talk so we can hear each other. We each have the same outline in front of us, which clearly indicates who is doing what. We each have a recording software open on our computers and press record at the same time (someone counts off),” says Van Orden.

“My co-host uploads the audio file to his site and I download it. Then I put the two audio files together and sync them. It sounds like we’re in the same room. This technique is often called a ‘double-ender’,” says Van Orden.

Paige Eissinger, who co-hosts a podcast called Views from the Coop, also uses Skype, but she uses a different technique than that of Van Orden.

“I use Skype and HotRecorder to create the podcasts I do with my co-host who lives in another state. HotRecorder is a very inexpensive program available online for download. Either party (or both) can record the conversation directly to their own computers with HotRecorder,” says Eissinger.

According to Eissinger, there is an additional benefit to using Hot Recorder to record your interviews.

“HotRecorder saves the file in the HotRecorder format, but a companion program called HotConverter comes with it that allows you to convert to a wav or ogg vorbis format. Once you’ve converted the file, you can open your conversation in your favorite audio editing program and edit away. The cool thing about it is that it records each voice of the conversation on a different track so you can edit them individually,” says Eissinger.

Podcating guru Penny Haynes, who produces 3 podcasts and is also the founder of the International Podcasting Expo, shares her own technique for recording interviews so she can get a broadcast quality sounding audio.

“I have interviewees download a free version of a program called RecordPad and give them my FTP information to insert into the Options section,” says Haynes.

“When they finish recording, the mp3 file is automatically uploaded to my server, so I can mix the two files as if they were with me when I recorded.”

For less technical interviewees and co-hosts who may be all thumbs when it comes to FTP programs and recording software, Donna Papacosta, who produces a podcast called Trafcom News Podcast, suggests getting recording equipment that connects into your phone.

“For remote guests, I use a Telecom Audio VoicePort hooked up to my phone and my Edirol R-1. The person on the other end doesn’t have to do anything other than talk,” says Papacosta.

As a first-time podcast producer, Danielle Culter used a tool called Gizmo Project to record her first podcast with her co-host who lives in another state.

“Quality isn’t too bad, and can be fixed up when you edit. My co-host spoke rather softly, so you can notice a difference in the levels there (or maybe I’m just a loudmouth), but overall I was pretty happy with the results,” says Culter.

Warren Contreras, a podcast enthusiast, agrees that the Gizmo Project tool can be effective at recording multiple voices in multiple locations.

“For multiple remote participants you might have a look at Gizmo Project. Conference calling is included as well as a one click record button,” says Contreras.

What Reunification Could Mean for North Cyprus

Since 1974, when Turkish forces responded to a Greek coup d’etat by invading Cyprus, the island has suffered from cultural divisions and political tensions. As a result of the disagreements, Turkey proclaimed its invaded section of the island the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and to this day Turkey is the only nation that recognizes the sovereignty of the state, and the only nation that offers it diplomatic support; the European Union and the United Nations both consider the Republic of Cyprus as the sole governor of the island. As a result, the TRNC has been historically reliant on Turkey for trade and export, and the upkeep of its economy. But Cypriot leaders Mehmet Ali Talat and Demetris Christofias are meeting today to discuss for the fifth time the reunification of their partitioned island, and unionists are hopeful; it is the first time that the TRNC and the Republic of Cyprus have both had pro-unification leaders in office at the same time. Some are skeptical, but most are claiming that a repeat of the 2004 Annan Plan Referendum failure are very unlikely indeed; not only are the two leaders genuinely committed, but Talat claims that the Turkish government in Ankara, too, want to see a positive end to the issue. And the Greek authorities, too, are generally in favour of unification. The stage is set. And commentators and experts agree that a reunification plan will only strengthen and benefit the island. For the TRNC of North Cyprus has seen a recent boost in tourist revenue, leading to what has been termed the North Cyprus property boom. Indeed it has fast become one of the world’s property hot spots. Many see the North Cyprus property boom as an example of the flourishing success of the TRNC of North Cyprus despite sanctions against them, and despite their lack of diplomatic support from anywhere other than Ankara. And if it can flourish without international support, experts are arguing that the boom will rocket through the roof if the TRNC joins with the Republic of Cyprus, because it will receive the support of the south of the island, and the benefits of European Union based trade. The reunification of the island of Cyprus, then, will be by no means a token gesture. It will have implications, throughout the European Community, and the island itself; first, it will spell a reconciliation between the E.U and Turkey - who have often been an uneasy but influential partner in European affairs - but it will also spread growth throughout the island. The tourist industry, and the North Cyprus Property boom, stand to benefit almost immediately. But after that, as sanctions are lifted, and the TRNC of North Cyprus feels the warmth of the European Community, it will benefit Cypriots right across the island.

How to Podcast? An Introduction to Podcasting

Podcasting is the newest craze on the internet and it continues to expand on a daily basis. Former MTV host Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer are credited with developing podcasting. Curry wrote a program called iPodder which allowed him to automatically download internet radio broadcasts to his iPod and Winer was instrumental in promoting RSS. (Really Simple Syndication).

What is RSS? RSS allows people the ability to subscribe to their favorite blog or podcast and the information can be automatically downloaded to their computer. Subsequently, Curry and Winer devised a way to send audio files through RSS feeds.

The term Podcasting comes from “iPod” and “Broadcasting”. However, you don’t need an iPod in order to record or listen to a podcast. Anyone with a computer or mp3 player can listen to a podcast.

From radio talk show hosts Al Franken to Rush Limbaugh, traditional radio is embracing podcasting. In addition, talk show host Sean Hannity and NPR (National Public Radio) are offering their shows in the form of a podcast.

Television is also welcoming podcasting. ABC News, CBS “60 Minutes”, TV Guide and Ebert/Roeper Movie Reviews are all available through podcasts.

What is Podcasting? Podcasting is an audio file that you create on your computer and then upload it to the internet so other people can hear it. All you need is a computer, microphone and voice-editing program.

Anyone can podcast. It is perfect for women, men, students, work-at-home-Moms and seniors. If you have something to say, podcasting is a great way to accomplish this goal.

Do you have a favorite hobby that you would like to share with others? Are you a business owner who would like to increase customers? Have you ever dreamed of being your own talk show host or disc jockey? With podcasting, all of the above things are possible.

You could have your very own podcast up and running today.

What do you need?

1. A Microphone

You will need a microphone for your computer so that you can record your show. You can purchase a decent microphone at any computer store or Radio Shack. (http://www.radioshack.com).

2. A Voice-Editing Program

Voice-editing programs allow you to record and edit your show. There are two free programs on the internet that you can use.
(a) Wavepad: (http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad)

(b) Audacity: (http://audacity.sourceforge.net)

3. Upload Show to Website or Hosting Company

After your show is recorded, you will need to upload it to the internet. You can either put it on your website or you can use one of the many hosting companies. Podblaze.com (http://www.podblaze.com) is one company where you can host your podcast.

As you can see, podcasting is very easy to start. We are at the beginning of this roller coaster ride that will hit astronomical proportions as time goes on.

The only way to decide if podcasting is for you is to start. Take the first step and see how you like it.
