Unique Gypsy Halloween Costume Ideas
Want to dress yourself or your kids in some unique gyspy Halloween costume ideas? Real gypsy garb is both simpler and more interesting than the Hollywood stereotype. With a bit of research you can put together something that looks authentic.
The word “gypsy” and the typical costume come from Western perceptions of the Romany people. Originating in central India, the Romany emigrated to Europe in medieval days. Romany people migrated all over eastern and central Europe, finally reaching Scandinavia and the British Isles, and journeying to the Americas beginning in colonial times.
Of course, Romany people dress in whatever clothing is available and comfortable where they live. But they also have traditional items that are easy enough to duplicate. You might find photos of gypsy girls wearing banjara head scarves and saris from India. Others have long full skirts covering the ankles, and high-necked, long-sleeved blouses. Romany Gypsies have a code of modesty similar to Muslim hijab that forbids cheap bodily display. But like hijab, this doesn’t mean the outfits can’t be colorful and attractive.
The skirt should be made of velveteen or satin and can be any solid color other than black or bright red. Deep red or maroon is okay. Men’s and women’s blouses can have full sleeves, what used to be called a “poet” shirt, but should be tied at the waist and the collars fastened. Women, especially young girls, wear their hair in braids. Men should have a moustache and perhaps a short beard.
Men should wear pants that are a bit baggy, with comfortable boots, along with neck scarves and vests. Fancy earrings, bracelets, anklets and long strings of beads are authentically worn by both men and women. Sashes rather than belts are common. Most of your costume should not look too expensive, but a piece of gold or silver jewelry is okay.
Head scarves are authentic and can be tied under the chin as well as behind the head. A big shawl is often worn by Turkish Romany. Instead of using a print fabric, get a solid color and embroider it with images of stars, moons, flowers, trees, birds and horses. The wheel is another important Romany symbol and appears on their flag.
A cloth pouch around the neck carries magic charms and talismans to ward off the evil eye. Your Halloween gypsy should also have a pack of tarot cards. If the kids have a wagon, they can fix it up to look like a vardo, the traditional Romany traveling wagon.
